If you are having financial difficulty, do not hesitate in contacting Jane. We are understanding & as flexible as possible, but please communicate with us... Our school however is not a hobby for us, even though we love what we do—we are a business, with massive overheads and unfortunately can not run classes for FREE!

PLEASE MAKE SURE ANY MONEY THAT COMES INTO THE STUDIO IS IN A LABELLED

ENVELOPE WITH YOUR CHILD’S FULL NAME  AND WHAT THE PAYMENT IS FOR. ALL DIRECT DEPOSIT PAYMENT MUST INCLUDE EITHER THE INVOICE NUMBER OR YOUR CHILD’S FULL NAME...SO WE KNOW WHO HAS PAID!

'YOU CAN DANCE’ STUDIO UNIFORM

We have a very affordable uniform available for purchase through the studio—all of which is displayed in the foyer. Uniform stock is available at most times from the studio throughout the year; however there may be a short wait for uniforms to be made and printed. Uniforms need to be paid for at the time of ordering (cash payments only so we can maintain our low prices).

All students are to wear full ‘You Can Dance’ uniform by the end of Term 1, 2012.

There are a variety of uniform garments available which are so you can mix and match! Ballet students are required to wear ballet stockings with their YCD leotard (ballet skirt is optional) unless it is too hot.

GREAT SAVINGS on uniforms at our enrolment day 21st January , 2012 .

These special prices will be for enrolment day ONLY, and must be paid for in cash on the day.

No excessively baggy clothing is to be worn to classes—to assist teachers in correcting students body alignment.

HAIR - All students are to wear their hair tied up off their face for classes. Ballet students – hair must be in a bun.

APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR:

Jazz/Funk/Hip Hop– Black jazz shoes. Students under the age of 12 are to wear soft leather jazz shoes – preferably split sole to ensure students are using their feet correctly. Those above the age of 12 may wear jazz boots although split sole are fine for over 12yrs too. The softer leather jazz sneakers are a preferred option.

Tap - Black flat tap shoes for all Tap classes (without sport or chorus heel) for all students.

Ballet/Contemporary – Pink leather ballet shoes for all Ballet and Junior contemporary classes. Intermediate & Senior Contemporary - foot thongs.

Tumbling - Require no shoes for class.

Cheerleading - Need plain white leather joggers – specific cheerleading shoes can be ordered at the beginning of the year, that are very reasonably priced and suited specifically to cheerleading.  These will be ordered direct from America—take advantage of this offer, its well worth it. Correct cheerleading shoes will be required for all students competing this year, while you wait for shoes to arrive from America joggers are fine.

All NEW dance shoes can be purchased from ‘Bloch’ in Penrith Plaza, ‘Prima Ballerina’ in High Street Mall Penrith, ‘Dancing Delight’ in Queen Street St Marys or 'Kids Gear' in Mt Druitt.

A number of these shops have shoes discounted at the beginning of the year—so do some research and SAVE!

No one can participate in classes without shoes, (except contemporary or tumbling students)

2ND HAND SHOES – A large range of pre-loved dance shoes are available for sale at the studio. If you wish to sell shoes, bring to the studio in a sealed large sandwich bag labelled with your child’s name and the price you wish to sell them for. Any money from shoes sold will be deducted from your fees or given to parents directly.

If you wish to wait to purchase all of your child’s shoes & uniform needs until you are sure your child is going to stick with their new classes this is no problem, but what is listed above is what all students are expected to have for their classes by the end of term one – if you need further advice please don’t hesitate to ask.

ATTENDANCE

By attending classes regularly, students will gain the most out of their tuition, and will quickly see improvements in their abilities. Attendance is crucial leading up to our end of year concert and for those wishing to do examinations.  Absences make it extremely difficult for our teachers to choreograph and polish routines - having class members away most certainly affects the quality achieved in performance. Performance quality is paramount and we wish to build a strong reputation in producing fine performers and displaying polished performances. Part of being professional is being committed to your group...DANCE IS A TEAM SPORT!!

It DOES make a difference if a student drops out at the last minute...people are counting on you to follow through with a commitment you started by joining the class. If you are going to be away please let your teacher know in advance where possible, and if you don’t plan on doing the end of year concert please communicate this well prior to term 3. By term 4, costumes have been made and positions have been choreographed (etc), in the expectation that your child will be performing, this costs us money and time and ultimately lets class mates and teachers down when it is not communicated that a student is not performing at the last minute.

PLEASE BE BOTHERED TO TELL US IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO PERFORM. If your child is not performing, they are still very welcome to continue class till the end of the year.

COSTUMING

‘You Can Dance’ provides all costuming for their students for our end of year concert production with our extensive wardrobe. This expands every year with the addition of new costumes. At concert time each child will receive their costume/s in a labelled bag which is itemised with it’s content, if costumes need to be altered—this is done for you, all costumes are laundered and organised by our staff and all students have costumes to wear for our concert performances.

To cover the cost of this very time consuming and expensive task and for the additions to our wardrobe in term 3, there will be a $15.00 charge per student to go towards costume hire. This cost is for students who do one class...for those that do more than one class, their costume hire charge will be $15 for the first costume and $5 for every other costume they need for our concert.

THAT IS ALL YOU WILL PAY FOR COSTUMING FOR THE YEAR!!!

Excluding the basics ie: shoes & stockings etc.

Costumes remain property of the studio. Students are fitted for their costumes in term 3 and will receive them prior to photo day. All costumes are then collected at the conclusion of the end of year concert. This is EXTREMELY cost effective for our YCD families—and VERY easy for everyone because it is all done for you!!!

I know for a fact that we are the cheapest in Sydney when it comes to costuming for our

concert each year.

If costumes are not returned or they are damaged parents will be invoiced for the full replacement cost.

CAN YOU SEW?? It is certainly welcomed if any of our parents are nifty with a sewing machine, overlocker, a needle and thread , using a glue gun or with prop design...please let us know!!!

Costuming for our students is also age appropriate, suitable for a family show and flattering on our students. We are working with children and therefore ensure that what students are dressed to perform in allows them to feel comfortable and also makes sure they look like children of their age! Music choice and choreography is also very important to us. Everything at ‘You Can Dance’ is age appropriate whether it be costuming, music or choreography!

MAKE-UP ON STAGE—It is expected that our students will wear make up for any performances they are involved with, to ensure their faces are not washed out under stage lighting.  This excludes the Tinies & boys and is kept very simple for our younger students.

COSTUME HIRE FOR OUTSIDE STUDIO USE —For parents and students of the studio - if you would like to hire costumes for a school performance or fancy dress party, there will be a minimal charge, a form will need to be signed to ensure everything is returned in the same condition, and a bond paid—which will returned when costumes are received. If you would like to hire a large group of costumes, we can certainly accommodate this request (price negotiable depending on quantity).  Please feel free to pass this information onto your primary and high schools—we have so many costumes, it is a shame they sit there for so much of the year!

TEACHING STAFF

‘You Can Dance’ ensures that all teachers leading classes are highly trained have had a lot of experience teaching children and professional performance experience. We will ensure the quality of teachers is always of the highest standard to make sure that children are learning the maximum they can in each class, feel challenged and motivated, and are gaining excellenece in their training.

It is also of extreme importance to us at ‘You Can Dance’ that teachers have a great rapport with their students, can bring the best out in them and really care about their well being – we want our children to not only learn through great tuition but also love coming to us because they know we care about them.

EXAMS IN BALLET AND TAP

At ‘You Can Dance’ we offer exams in both Ballet and Tap. Exams are not compulsory, however if we feel your child will be successful and achieve an encouraging result, we will make this known to you as the year progresses. If your child is selected it is recommended they give it a go as we obviously feel they will benefit from the experience.

Ballet Syllabus—R.A.D (Royal Academy of Dancing)

Tap Syllabus— GWT (Glenn Wood Tap)

We believe these syllabi are the best to teach our students in ballet and tap—as they are both very technically grounded and have proven to achieve great results—not just in exams but in overall dance technique. Glenn Wood Tap syllabus is relatively new, but it is innovative, exciting to teach & learn and the whole exam experience is VERY positive for all our students— we have achieved exceptional results in the last few years and the quality we are producing with our tappers is outstanding! Tap exams are held at our studio toward the end of term 3/beginning term 4—date to be confirmed.

R.A.D Ballet exams are very disciplined, technical and challenging however we believe it’s grade work is the best training—giving our dancers the best ballet experience there is! Again we have achieved exceptional results in the past few years.  For those that choose to do their ballet exam, from term 2 they will need to attend an extra class to ensure they are ready for their exams.– which are usually scheduled in term 4.  Many of our Grade 5 and up students doing their exams choose to do a weekly private lesson for one on one tuition to achieve the best possible results—although this is not necessary for all students.

If our staff feel your child is capable of participating in their exams this year we will communicate this during term 1 for Ballet, and later in the year for Tap. It is a great achievement for any of our students to do their exams—it makes them much more accountable for their work, and the results shine through in their overall improvement because of the extra work they have put in. Doing exams is not for everyone but most certainly worthwhile in a students overall dance training...it is nice to be acknowledged independently on the skill of your dance execution!

WHY BALLET??? I CAN NOT EXPRESS ENOUGH—THE BENEFITS OF BALLET!!! THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CLASS ANY DANCER CAN INCLUDE IN THEIR CLASS REPOITOIRE. THE TECHNIQUE, POSTURE, GRACE, POISE, CORE STRENGTH, FLEXIBILTY, BODY ALIGMENT AND DISCIPLINE THAT IT WILL GIVE EVERY DANCER WILL CARRY THROUGH THE REST OF THEIR LIVES!

You don’t have to have aspirations to be a ballerina to do ballet! The benefits of ballet will be seen across all classes a student attends and this can not be emphasised enough...please consider including ballet on your class list this year as it will bring so much more technique, strength  and compliment every other class your child attends!!

END OF YEAR CONCERT PRODUCTION

YOU CAN DANCE have an end of year concert production in December to showcase the achievements of our students. ALL students attending our school will perform and have their chance to shine on stage! If you are unavailable to take part of our end of year concert, please let your teacher know well before Term 3 so costuming and choreography is not organised for your child. unnecessarily.

The students work hard all year to get their concert performances ready, please embrace this as it is always a brilliant night which the children get a HUGE thrill out of!

Concert Venue—The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith.

In term 4 a comprehensive note with all concert details will be emailed and sent home in a hard copy—please ensure when this information comes home, all parents read this information thoroughly. We run a very organised concert and do rely on everyone remaining informed about procedures at our concerts. If you have any questions regarding our end of year concerts please don’t hesitate to ask!

STAR SEARCH NIGHT

‘STAR SEARCH’ night is a fantastic event where all students are invited to choreograph their own item to perform. Two winners from the night will perform their items at our end of year concert. An independent judge will come along for the night to give the students feedback and lots of our performers receive awards on the night. We will assist with costuming, props and music editing—whatever your child needs…the rest is in the hands of the students!! Everyone is encouraged to participate, it is a very positive evening where the students really get a chance to be creative and SHOW OFF!

PERFORMANCES/PERFORMANCE CLASSES

In 2011 ‘You Can Dance’ had our most successful year with our performance teams and competition cheerleaders Not only did we win Level 1 Grand Champions at State and National Cheer and Dance Competitions (along with a huge number of other 1st place awards at regional, State and National level competitions), we performed on the P & O Pacific Jewel, travelled to Brisbane to compete and made it through to the hip Hop International Battlegrounds championship & supported various community based events throughout the year. WOW!!

Performance class students are our ‘You Can Dance’ representatives throughout the year at the many events we perform at. We are have a great reputation out there and I want to ensure this continues!!

Majority of performances will be restricted to the performance classes and/or competition teams – however other students may be invited to perform at events throughout the year if the opportunity arises. Attendance to any rehearsal or cheer class is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL if students wish to perform at an upcoming event. Absences prior to a performance will jeopardise your position.

We have lots of exciting things on the horizon for our performing and competition students—I look forward to an AMAZING year ahead!!

PERFORMANCE CLASSES WILL BE OPEN TO ANYONE THAT IS AGE APPROPRIATE THIS YEAR—AS LONG AS THE PREREQUISITE CLASSES ARE TAKEN. STUDENTS MUST DISPLAY THE RIGHT ATTITUDE  IN ALL CLASSES, SHOW COMMITTMENT, DEDICATION, COME TO CLASS WELL REHEARSED AND BE READY TO PUT THE TIME IN TO WORK HARD!!

Performance class costs are discounted as this is an extra class on top of regular classes (unless you have reached a 6 class maximum charge for classes – then there is no extra!)  Extra rehearsals that may be needed from time to time is NOT charged for. Cheerleaders will do their performance and competition

preparation in their weekly classes, with the occasional extra rehearsal.

As a general rule all performance and cheer students get much time invested than what they pay for during the year!!

PERFORMANCE & COMPETING CHEER STUDENTS WILL NEED FULL YCD UNIFORM AND A PERFORMANCE TEAM TRACKSUIT.

COMMUNICATION

At ‘You Can Dance’ we believe in keeping lines of communication open at all times, so if you have anything you need to discuss please don’t hesitate in contacting us. Our staff are very approachable—please see them either before or after they have finished teaching so as not to disturb their classes if the need should arise. Newsletter/notes and emails will circulate to keep you up to date throughout the year and the large whiteboard in the foyer will be updated with any relevant information you need to know about upcoming events within the studio.

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR—PLEASE LET US KNOW SO WE CAN UPDATE OUR FILES AT THE STUDIO.

Organising a large student body is a enormous task, and we do take the time to keep you up to date and informed with reasonable expectations to organise your calendars etc. Please take a few minutes to read the notes and/or emails that are sent home—it is your children that are affected when parents don’t know what is going on. We are a very organised school, which allows everything to run smoothly. We use multiple methods of informing our parents of what is happening so no one misses anything—if for some reason you think you may have missed something or are not receiving our emails, please let us know.

If you have any queries at all please send an email, make a phone call or write a message and pop in the locked box in studio 1, near the back office (downstairs). We are not into ‘guess’ work—so rather than guess something you are not sure of—please ask! We are only too happy to help or give more explanation if needed, however most of the time your questions will be answered by the information sent home—so please take the time to read things through thoroughly .

We are also not fans of gossip or innuendo being spread through the grapevine—if you have a problem at all please contact Jane rather than gossiping about it. We have been running our studio for 8 years and through trial and error have come up with the systems that we feel work best for our school—we tweak things each year to make our school run more efficiently and effectively. If you need more information or explanation as to why we do the things the way we do, we would be happy to explain our decisions...at the same time we are very open to suggestion. If you have any ideas on how we can better run our school—by all means LET US KNOW! We certainly don’t profess to know it all and welcome your constructive suggestions 100%!
